Coax, RJ, Fibre, Wave and all other forms of Network architecture knowledge is required to develop products, services, integrations and sometimes logging in a wide variety of formats including familiarity with the roads.
'Back in the day' We had a Melways in Australia, or a Gregories. These were thick 300+ page books that contained google maps source code. You had to compile it on the fly, between your knees with no seat belt while driving with one knee, window down and a ciggie in the mouth.
Computer Networks rapidly changed from ring, tokens, IPv's and structures although the simple fact remains; a pathway must exist for the ability to take place. This pathway needs to be the fastest, secure and most reliable way while maintaining efficiency so that my illegally hosted web server and spliced dial up modem doesn't explode and the cops are not informed by my power company thinking I'm growing a crop when I've really got the equivalent of a modern Data Center running in the shed with the beer fridge keeping everything at just enough operating temperature.
Network Technology, Architecture and choice has exploded with cloud technologies, automation and AI possibilities as well as demand. I'm still of the mindset that Private Sovereign Network and Data should be key, Performance and Security a close second while how I can automate or improve it is a constant evolution.
